Cyber crime - The growing number of internet users coupled with fast, mobile and anonymous access to the internet has created a new type of criminal - the cyber criminal. By this, we are not only talking about conventional "criminals" but also the intelligence services of different governments. Dealing in data is big business these days. Even official ministries (e.g. tax authorities) are trying to buy data. In addition to this, some governments are allowing their agencies to collect personal data from the internet, computers, email accounts etc. In addition, it has long been recognized that serious security threats come from employees, ex-employees and contractors.
Few would argue that IT security is a very important topic for every company that has sensitive data stored in their IT infrastructure. Unfortunately, numerous studies of IT security have come to the conclusion that this is not being taken seriously enough. Two main reasons were identified for the lack of security management:
- Time: In most small to medium sized enterprises (SMB), security management is seen as the responsibility of the network or system administrator. The reality is that their time and efforts are focused on completing their daily operations responsibilities and they have little or no time available to address security issues.
- Budget: most of these companies are aware that security is an important issue but it is often difficult to justify expenditure based on a business case or Return On Investment (ROI). Only a few have analyzed the true costs associated with their risk, for example, calculating the cost of a partial loss of their data due to a cyber attack or the costs of downtime because of a virus treatment. Without an understanding of these costs/risks, businesses are not willing to invest time and money.
